In a momentous announcement made during the parliamentary session today, March 20, 2025, Prime Minister Hon. James Marape confirmed that he will officiate the opening of the long-awaited New Enga General Hospital on March 31, 2025, in Wabag. The new hospital represents a significant milestone for the people of Enga and the broader Papua New Guinea (PNG) health system.
The Prime Minister expressed his excitement about the project, highlighting its importance in improving healthcare accessibility and delivery for the people of Enga. As one of the nation's largest infrastructure projects in the health sector, the New Enga General Hospital is poised to serve as a beacon of modern healthcare services, bringing state-of-the-art medical care to the region.
"I am proud to announce that on the 31st of March, 2025, I will be in Wabag to officially open this critical health facility for our people," said Prime Minister Marape. "This hospital will provide essential services to our people and will greatly improve the quality of healthcare, not just in Enga, but for the surrounding provinces as well."
While the hospital's construction is a significant achievement, Prime Minister Marape also took the opportunity to commend the tireless efforts of the Governor of Enga, Hon. Grand Chief Sir Peter Ipatas KBE, GCL, and MP. Under his visionary leadership, Enga has seen major improvements in infrastructure, and the New Enga General Hospital is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people.
"I must recognize the hard work and dedication of Governor Sir Peter Ipatas, whose leadership has been instrumental in making this hospital a reality," the Prime Minister added. "His relentless advocacy for better healthcare services for the people of Enga has not only secured funding for this project but has also ensured that Enga remains at the forefront of health infrastructure development in the country."
Governor Ipatas has long been a champion for the development of Enga, and his role in bringing this state-of-the-art hospital to life underscores his continued determination to improve the lives of his constituents. The new hospital, which has been in the works for several years, is a key part of the government's commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in remote and underserved areas of PNG. The state-of-the-art facility will offer a wide range of medical services, including emergency care, maternity services, and specialized treatments.
"This is about improving the lives of our people. We want to ensure that no matter where you live, you have access to quality healthcare," Marape added.
The opening of the New Enga General Hospital marks a new chapter for health services in the region and is expected to have a transformative impact on the local community, reducing the need for residents to travel long distances for medical care. The Prime Minister’s attendance on March 31st is eagerly anticipated by the people of Enga, who view the hospital as a symbol of progress and government commitment to their well-being.
